Novel electrodisinfection/electrocoagulation integrated process with iron bipolar electrodes for wastewater reuse

Reclaimed wastewater has become a potential water resource for many dry areas. Its recovery should be regarded as an additional stage in the water cycle providing a new water resource and preserving other high quality sources for more demanding applications. However, in this new scenario, a special attention should be paid to its physicochemical and microbiological quality to avoid damage to public health and to the environment. In this context, electrochemical technologies such as electrocoagulation and electrodisinfection emerge as good alternatives to obtain water with the required quality for reuse from urban treated wastewater [1]. Thus, the goal of this work is to evaluate the use of a novel electrochemical cell, which joins electrodisinfection and electrocoagulation, for the reclamation of an actual effluent from the municipal wastewater treatment facility of Ciudad Real (Spain).
